How to Metal Detect: Tips & Tricks

Did you know that according to statistics, 70% of diggers do not metal detect correctly? Are you sure that yesterday, the day before yesterday, a month or a year ago you did not miss your biggest find? No? Then read carefully! Here, we have collected some simple, but very useful tips and tricks for you.

Metal detectors are easy to use, but you need some skill to apply them successfully, such as holding the metal detector so that the coil is positioned correctly, so it is parallel to the ground and not angle wise as shown below!

This allows the metal detector to equally scan the area.

This is also relevant when sweeping your metal detector from side to side as you want to make half circles that are parallel to the ground, and not arching away from the surface as shown below.

When searching on land or beach, you want to keep a certain pattern that overlaps and covers all places of interest, otherwise you risk to missing some valuable objects. The best way to do this is by using the same method that farmers use when plowing fields: they follow the patterns of overlapping the lots of land! This will ensure that you do not miss out any areas of potential finds. Use a method that is half a circle of rotation whilst walking forward by drawing an imaginary circle with your metal detectors coil upon the ground! This method will help you cover the area properly! Don’t just jump in and cover ground here and there and everywhere, as there is no method involved, and you will lose track of where you have and haven’t detected, which means missing possible finds.

This is an example of how to metal detect efficiently using the method that I have described above. It is organized and symmetrical, preventing you from missing valuable items. When beach combing, stick to areas of high foot traffic, sunbathing, and fishing. Also, make sure to check along tidal lines, as the sea can bring new bounty with every tide! For a beginner, I would recommend using manual settings to get a feel for your detector first, and then go on to turning on the discriminator settings once you have got used to detecting, and can apply the manual tuning to discriminate specific metals that you prefer to find. You can do this practicing in your backyard or Local Park, by burying items and then spotting them! Choose objects of different metal composition and sizes.
